Frequently asked questions
What’s your favorite part of a wedding day?
This is one of those answers that shifts around. The great thing about being primarily a wedding photographer is that weddings require such a diverse amount of skills. You have the opportunity to be a photojournalist - hands off and creating compelling images of high emotional moment. You get to be a portrait photographer - creating editiorial inspired photographs and controlling (as much as one can on a wedding day) backgrounds and finding the best posing and gestures. There are elements of commercial/product photography as I photograph all the decor and detail elements of all the things you took the time and energy to make decisions on.
Currently, I’d say that toasts/speeches are my favorite. It’s documentary and uncontrolled and just full of great moments and reactions. Also, I’ve worked so closely for months with my clients at that point, it is super fun to get to hear all the stories!
Is it always Kimberly and a second photographer for weddings? What if I don’t think I need a second photographer?
When you book Into Dust Photography for your wedding, it is always me, Kimberly and a second photographer. You’ll never have a rando just show up at the wedding while I’m off somewhere else. I’d say “can you imagine?” but we’ve all heard the horror stories!
As for two photographers, this is a super common question and I get it, for small weddings or short weddings it can feel like maybe two photographers don’t make sense - however! I always want you to have the most incredible photos from your day and often, having two angles on a moment is key for that. Let’s take the ceremony - traditionally, I’ll be at the front of the aisle capturing everyone as they come down, parent reactions, and that magical end of the aisle reaction. Having a trusted second photographer means you get documentary photographs of those moments prior to coming down the aisle - the hugs, deep breathing, and anticipation. Also, if your grandma wants me for a photo while something like toasts are going on, I don’t have to say make a choice between two things and you get both 🖤
Do I get all my wedding photos? High resolution?
Yes! There is a strange trend in the wedding industry to show you wedding photos but then charge for the digitals or high resolution versions. I don’t do that. You will never see a wedding photo that you don’t also get the high resolution, digital version of. There are no watermarks on high resolution images and you can treat them just like personal photos; post them, share them, order prints and products from other labs. The big request is that you not sell them or distribute them to vendors as they’ll be using them commercially and that requires a few rules. Just send those requests to me - but I’ll also have already reached out to your vendors to make the process easier on you!
How do we book you for a wedding?
After we’ve gotten to chat and make sure we’re a great fit, we’ll create a custom timeline and really dial in the hours you need to make sure we get everything that is most important to you. I want things to be super transparent from the start! Booking means I turn away all other inquiries for your date. To do that, it’s a $2000 retainer towards the total and a signed contract. Don’t worry - no printer necessary!
What do you photograph with?
I use a set of professional Canon cameras with their professional series lenses along with a medium format Fuji system. There are multiple cameras and lenses providing backups in case of breakage or theft on the day. Analog film can also be requested for your wedding.
Should we anticipate any additional costs after we book you in a collection?
Nope! Even from our first meeting, we’ll be chatting about your priorities for your experience of the day - maybe you want to get straight to the party, maybe you want as many epic portraits as possible - and come up with a photo timeline. Using that, the proposal you receive will be all encompassing of photography coverage, clear about the engagement session and what’s included, any album credits that are included, and especially, the knowledge that every wedding image you see in the gallery is yours at high resolution. No extra purchase necessary. The only things people tend to add are ancillary events like rehearsal dinners, boudoir sessions, or if the planning gets more intense and you need to add more hours beyond the initial plan, that!
Do you and your team have your Covid-19 Vaccine?
Yes! Fully vaxxed here but also happy to wear a mask at your preference. My priority is keeping you and your guests comfortable and safe.
Where did the company name come from?
Into Dust Photography was created during a time of introspection and reinvention brought on by Covid 19. After a decade in a partnership, it was time to create a solo brand that fully represented all the things I love about being a photographer. The tricky part was creating something new a decade into the dominance of social media platforms like instagram where it seemed every photography name was taken. During the pandemic, I’d experienced a real return to just mainlining music. The Mazzy Star song, Into Dust kept registering with me and in deeper thought, it really encompassed the serenity and reflection that photographs afford. A logistical check to see if it was a viable name bore out successfully and I’m so happy for it!
